At the heart of this transformation, a pioneering curriculum offers a more flexible approach to GCSEs. Recognising the pressure students face in balancing so many subjects, Saint Felix has reduced the number of GCSEs students can choose to just 6 to 8, in contrast to the typical 9 or 10. This reduction allows students to focus on subject areas they are passionate about, thus reducing unnecessary stress and promoting a healthier, more fulfilling lifestyle. This tailored approach enhances academic performance whilst supporting students’ mental health, providing them with the space to thrive both in and outside the classroom.
Beyond academics, Saint Felix School has significantly expanded its co-curricular programme, encouraging students to pursue a variety of enriching activities. Options, such as golf, archery, equestrianism, surfing, Duke of Edinburgh, forest school, swimming, and triathlon, are now integrated into the weekly schedule, with three dedicated sessions for co-curricular involvement. These activities, combined with community service initiatives, ensure students have time to unwind, explore new interests, and enjoy their time at school.
The introduction of the Saint Felix Diploma further supports student development. This comprehensive programme combines both core and optional modules, from arts and sciences to sports and practical skills; the diploma equips students with diverse opportunities, while a strong careers and higher education programme ensures they are well-prepared for life beyond school.
With evidence showing that children benefit from having a constant and positive adult mentor, Saint Felix School has also implemented a mentoring programme for students in years 7 to 13. The scheme ensures each student is paired with a mentor who will provide academic and pastoral support. With their mentor’s guidance, individuals can navigate their unique educational journey successfully while achieving personal growth, improving their mental health and wellbeing, and building resilience.
Over the summer, extensive renovations have modernised the school facilities, which will continue as part of a 10-year development plan. These enhancements include upgraded classrooms and learning spaces that create a stimulating environment for learning and innovation. Saint Felix is also transitioning to be a Microsoft Showcase School, equipping all staff and classrooms with Microsoft devices to enrich teaching and learning experiences.
